Spectrum: A neurodivergent horror anthology, out now

April 4, 2024

Cover of 'Spectrum: an autistic horror anthology' shows an eyeball in red and black inked lines. My first publication of 2024 is out now and I’m honoured that it’s in ‘Spectrum: An Autistic Horror Anthology’, out now from Third Estate Books.

This is Third Estate’s first anthology and I have to say they’ve been an absolute pleasure to work with and I’m not only delighted to be a part of a collection chock-full of neurodivergent and LGBT+ horror representation, I’m also grateful to have worked with them.

‘Spectrum’ delivers neurodivergent horror from authors who have lived experience with neurodivergency. I’m not diagnosed myself, but I’m all too familiar with experiences (such as the anxiety, distraction and intrusive thoughts that feature in my story, ‘Curse the Darkness’) that lead me to believe that I’m probably living with some form of neurodivergency. Whilst ‘Curse the Darkness’ is far from autobiographical in its characters and events, there’s a lot of my personal experience in there in terms of thought processes and the rabbit holes my mind constantly wanders off down.

Third Estate Books describes ‘Spectrum’:

Deep in the recesses of our minds are twisted realities that so closely mirror our own. In these pages, our nightmares are laid bare, made to manifest. There is no waking up; there is no going back once you fall into the tapestry of terrors that await. Are you ready? From courteous neighbors gone awry to the burning brightness of everlasting daylight comes Spectrum: An Autistic Horror Anthology reflective of the vast array of neurodivergent artists in our community and the things that keep them up in the night, the things they can’t look away from.

Don’t Blink.

I can highly recommend picking up a copy of this one, to either see yourself represented in horror, or to learn more about the experience of being neurodivergent through the lens of new storytelling. Third Estate absolutely nailed it with this one – and just look at that gorgeous cover by Jonathan LaMantia! I can’t wait to see what they release next.
